PED Talk @ McMaster University

Creating Hamilton’s Industrial Bayfront

Hamilton’s Bayfront is the city’s largest industrial area and a major revitalization opportunity. With the changes in the steel industry and in the manufacturing landscape, the Bayfront represents a significant city-building opportunity within the broader Hamilton and Greater Toronto Area.

In this PEDTalk, we trace the development of the “manufacturing district” that emerged in the decades that followed, a mix of heavy and light industry as well as working class neighbourhoods. We consider the challenges faced by Hamilton’s civic boosters over those decades as they sought to build liveable communities, ones that would avoid the blight that they associated with other industrial cities.

This talk will also provide an opportunity to learn about the City of Hamilton’s Bayfront Industrial Strategy. Planning and Economic Development staff will join the keynote speakers to introduce the comprehensive work that the City is undertaking to guide future improvements, investments and redevelopment of this important employment area.

When: 4:30 – 6:30

Where: David Braley Health Sciences Centre, McMaster University,100 Main Street West
