There is a tight bond between human health and the environment.
When our natural environment becomes unstable due to environmental toxins and pollution, our health is put at risk, too. By taking action and responsibility towards environmental sustainability, we can work together to make a brighter future for everyone.
We put together a list of 3 simple ways you can help protect yourself, your family and the environment on a daily basis.
1.Switch to Chemical-Free Cleaning Products
The majority of cleaning products available are packed with toxic ingredients. The use of these all-purpose cleaners, dishwashing soaps, drain cleaners, laundry detergents, etc. can pose serious health hazards and environmental risks. Cleaning products are a top reason for calls to Poison Control Centres and can cause issues such as; respiratory distress, headaches, nausea, dizziness, chemical burns, and hormone disruption. Along with your own personal health concerns, these products, which then get washed down the sink, leave a nasty mark on the environment. The chemicals in these products do everything from creating toxicity in wildlife to mimicking estrogen and creating a surge of only female fish (leading to an inability to mate), to being absorbed back into the soil and reducing the nutrient density of the crops we grow… and then eat.
But there’s good news… there are POWERFUL natural cleaning agents that we can use instead. Ingredients like apple cider vinegar and lemon (or another citrus) oil can be used to clean even the grimiest of messes. Even if you’re not a D.I.Y type of person, there are natural cleaning and household products (such as Hamilton-made Spiffy Natural’s) available in-stores, online, and certainly available for Bike delivery.
2. Use Natural Personal Care Products
Along with your household cleaners, the products you use for body care matter, too. Your skin, being the largest organ on the body, contains many pores that allow for absorption and penetration of chemicals into the body and bloodstream. Consider all the possible chemicals that you come into contact every day in regards to personal care; city-treated water, face-wash, deodorants, moisturizers, hair gels and sprays, soaps, body wash, shampoos and conditioners, make-up, etc. Unfortunately, many of the “safe” ingredients approved by the FDA are known endocrine-disrupters and can promote the growth of cancer in the body. And of course, as with the household cleaners, what you don’t absorb of those chemicals tends to get washed down the drain and sent back into the environment.
Having radiant and youthful skin is a by-product of what you use both internally and externally. Natural personal care products can help prevent skin irritation, acne, and an over-worked liver. With chemical-free products, you eliminate both the personal and environmental risks. You can find great products from companies like Green Beaver, who work hard to provide you with purest ingredients Mother Nature has to offer.
3. Minimize Use of Plastic
Our oceans are literally drowning in plastic. So much so, that they have literally started finding tiny pieces of plastic in human bodies due to seafood consumption. According to the Plastic Oceans Organization, over 8 million tons of plastic is dumped into the ocean each year. Everything from fishing equipment to single-use packaging, to water/juice/pop bottles, to plastic bags are making their way into the water and eventually into our own bodies. Plain and simple, we need to stop this now. We all need to actively take part in reducing our own use of plastic.
Purchasing plastic-eliminating products can be both easy and more economical. The amount you spend weekly or monthly on items like plastic wrap, bags, etc. can easily be emitted by one time purchases of awesome local products like Mind Your Bees food wraps or buying your products in reusable mason jars from companies like Jarred!
